Doughnut race raises $120K for hospital

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Organizers of the eighth annual Krispy Kreme Challenge in North Carolina said 7,700 people participated to raise more than $120,000 for a hospital.

The organizers said the participants in Saturday's race ran from the North Carolina State Bell Tower in Raleigh to the Krispy Kreme store 2 1/2 miles away and attempted to down a dozen doughnuts before running back to the bell tower, the North Carolina State University Technician Online reported Monday.

The participants raised more than $120,000 for the North Carolina Children's Hospital.

Police said there were no major incidents reported during the race, but there were some expected problems, such as participants vomited while attempting to run on a full stomach.

Man, firefighter trapped in elevator

CHICAGO, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Authorities in Chicago said a man trapped in an elevator was rescued by a firefighter, but the pair soon became stuck in a second elevator.

Fire officials said firefighters responded to the Park Monroe Condominiums around 9:15 p.m. Sunday on a report of a man stuck in an elevator between the 21st and 22nd floors, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

The officials said a firefighter went up an elevator in an adjoining shaft and used the ceiling hatches to bring the trapped man to the second elevator. However, that elevator then became stuck and the men were rescued by firefighters in a third elevator.

The cause of the malfunction was not immediately determined, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

Baby born at side of interstate

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A San Diego man said he just pulled over to the side of the road when his wife told him their baby was coming.

Aaron Reynolds said he was driving his wife, Nicole, to a hospital around 12:50 a.m. Monday when they realized they wouldn't make it in time. He pulled over to the side of northbound Interstate 15, called 911 and delivered the baby with instructions from a dispatcher as they awaited paramedics, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.

The father said his wife and baby Jeremiah were doing well at a hospital. The newborn weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Loose goat captured in Australia

MELBOURNE, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Police in Australia said a goat reported on the loose near the Melbourne Zoo was caught at the end of a four-hour search.

Police said officers were sent to search the area around 10:20 a.m. Monday after the billy goat was reported wandering near the zoo. The animal was finally located and captured at 2:30 p.m., The Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.

Melbourne Zoo spokeswoman Judith Henke said no goats are kept at the zoo.

Investigators said it is unclear whether the goat was the same animal spotted wandering in the city several times in recent weeks.
