Donations pour in for evicted 101-year-old

DETROIT, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A 101-year-old Detroit woman who was evicted from her home said offers of cash and services have been rolling in since her situation was first reported.

Texana Hollis, who was removed from her home by a Housing and Urban Development foreclosure, said offers of money and services have been pouring in since she was left alone in a wheelchair outside of her home with her belongings in the trash in September, The Detroit News reported Friday.

"Lord, yes, I had no idea in the world so many people was thinking about little old me," Hollis said Wednesday. "It's just a blessing, I'm telling you."

Pollian Cheeks, 68, a longtime family friend who welcomed Hollis into her home, said she has set up a P.O. Box for donations, and cash has been rolling in to help the senior citizen replace her belongings.

"I said, 'People are sending you money to get you new clothes -- stop worrying about those old clothes,'" Cheeks said.

Cheeks said comedian Tyler Perry called her home and spoke with Hollis after hearing about her situation and a contracting company in St. Clair Shores has offered to install a wheelchair ramp at her home to help Hollis get in and out.

"Look here, I'm a firm believer that God don't make no mistakes," Cheeks said. "He'll close one door, he'll open up a better door."

She said donations can be sent to Texana Hollis at P.O. Box 4270, Detroit, Mich., 48204.
