Memorial erected for killed turkey
WOODSTOCK, Ga., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Residents of Woodstock, Ga., have set up a memorial along a highway where Bob the Turkey, the town's unofficial mascot, lived and died.
Bob was hit by a car and killed Sunday near the intersection where he lived, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.
He just "showed up out of nowhere and people started seeing him all the time," about a year ago, City Clerk Rhonda Pezzello told the newspaper.
"He became an icon," Pezzello said.
Bob was buried near the city limit sign and people have flocked to the area setting up a makeshift memorial with flowers.
Resident Robert Ray Holcombe said he'd like to see the area turned into a park.
"I would like to see that vacant land where Bob hung out to be bought and made into a city or state park and make it where people could go and have a good time, maybe even have a game ranch like Yellow River does, also put in a city swimming pool and picnic areas! Name it Bob's Park," he said.
Pezzello said there are no plans for a park but a permanent plaque in the shape of a turkey will be erected at the burial site.
Bob was given a Thanksgiving pardon from Mayor Donnie Henriques in November.
Escaped bomb-sniffing dog captured
ROMULUS, Mich., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A retired bomb-sniffing dog that worked at the White House was captured Tuesday after escaping from handlers and biting two officers at a Detroit Airport.
Arco, a 5-year-old Belgian shepherd, had arrived on a flight Monday from Arizona to be united with new owners, but got loose when the owner let him out to relieve himself, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Arco bit two Romulus police officers when they attempted to grab him by the collar around 5:30 a.m. near Detroit Metro Airport. One officer required stitches to a bite on his hand.
Animal control officers and police captured the dog Tuesday afternoon using a looped leash. Arco will be quarantined for 10 days at the Romulus Animal Shelter before being released to the new owners.
Arco had been at Rescued Helpers Inc. for the past seven months, but founder Nadine Karsevar told the newspaper he was not an aggressive dog.
"He's not vicious," she said. "We have had him at events. We have had him in parades."
Arco was retired because he killed a cat that came into the backyard in Virginia where he worked as a bomb-sniffing dog.
Scotland gives Trump coat of arms
BALMEDIE, Scotland, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. business mogul Donald Trump has finally been awarded an official coat of arms by Scottish heraldic authority.
Trump had been trying to create a coat of arms for the Trump International Golf Links at the Menie Estate in Balmedie in northeast Scotland, The (Aberdeen) Press and Journal reported.
In 2008, Trump received a reprimand from the heraldic authority for creating an unregistered crest for violating Scottish laws dating back to 1672, Newscore reported.
The crest will promote the massive golf resort scheduled to open this summer. The resort, plans for which were announced in March 2006, was a controversial project that triggered environmental protests.
Mary Anne MacLeod, Trump's mother, was born on Scotland's Isle of Lewis. Trump has long touted his ties to Scotland.
Snake escapes on French train
MARSEILLE, France, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Officials with the French railway said a 6 1/2-foot snake that escaped on a train was found in a ventilation shaft.
The officials told La Provence newspaper the boa constrictor's owner noticed one of his two snakes was missing from their bag during the Paris to Marseille train ride Saturday and specially trained firefighters were brought on board after all the passengers left in Marseille, The Local reported Tuesday.
The firefighters dismantled portions of the train's walls and discovered the boa hiding in a ventilation shaft. The snake was returned to its owner.
