GLASGOW, Scotland, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A Scottish member of the British Parliament was pushed out of a party media advisory role after posting a parody video comparing a politician to Adolf Hitler.

Tom Harris, a Labor party politician representing Glasgow South, used a clip from the 2004 movie "Downfall" to mock First Minister Alex Salmond, who is also head of the Scottish National Party, for refusing to fire aide Joan McAlpine when she said any politicians opposing the Scottish National Party are "anti-Scottish," The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

The "Downfall" clip, starring Bruno Ganz as Hitler, the World War II German Nazi leader, has been repeatedly re-subtitled in the years since its release to mock public figures, the British newspaper noted.

"The video I posted has been a well-worn joke used to parody a range of public figures," Harris said in a statement.

Harris said the video was meant to make light of Salmond's handling of the referendum on Scottish independence.

However, Harris said he resigned his post as the party's new media adviser at the request of Johann Lamont, Labor's Scottish leader.
