Tunnelers steal ATM

MANCHESTER, England, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Thieves dug a tunnel into a British Blockbusters outlet and stole an ATM, but poor timing might have cost the thieves close to $20,000, police say.

When the cash machine was taken last week it held only 6,000 pounds ($9,200) because of heavy use during the New Year's holiday, when normally it would have contained more than three times as much money, the Daily Express reported.

Police were called to the store in Manchester's Fallowfield district after employees found the ATM missing. Investigators discovered the tunnel, which connected the store with a vacant lot.

An attempt to tunnel into the store in 2007 failed when electrical workers stumbled upon the underground passageway. The attempted tunnel was subsequently filled with concrete.
