LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles-based magazine has named Salt Lake City as the gayest city in the United States, followed by Orlando, Fla., and Cambridge, Mass.

The Advocate said its list, which was created using a formula taking population into account as well as categories including the numbers of LGBT elected officials, laws protecting the rights of transgendered people, LGBT bookstores, nude yoga classes and WNBA teams, was topped by Salt Lake City, followed by Orlando; Cambridge; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Seattle; and Ann Arbor, Mich.

"While those unfamiliar with the Beehive State are likely to conjure images of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, far-less-oppressive-than-it-used-to-be Salt Lake City has earned its queer cred," the magazine said.

The list also includes Minnesota's twin cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul; Knoxville, Tenn.; Atlanta; and Grand Rapids, Mich.
