WOODINVILLE, Wash., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- An electric fence failure led coyotes to kill nearly 100 chickens kept by a Washington state restaurant, owners said.

The staff of the Herbfarm Restaurant in Woodinville discovered the slain chickens New Year's day, KOMO-TV, Seattle reported Sunday.

"There was one chicken sitting on the fence, looking forlorn, saying, 'Where's all my friends?' There were a lot of other chickens just laying around," said Carrie Van Dyck, owner of the restaurant.

The restaurant serves dishes that highlight locally grown ingredients and while they once relied on local farms for their eggs, the owners started producing their own, expanding from an initial six birds to about 150.

"It's pretty indescribable, I think. It's just really rich. The fat content in them is incredible. It's palette-coating. It's really rich," chef Chris Weber said. "They're really special. We treat 'em like gold."

Van Dyck said the restaurant plans to start over -- the staff has fixed the fence and added automatic closing doors on the chicken coop.

"We have chickens. It's our job to protect the chickens. We failed, and the coyotes won Round One. Going into Round Two now," said Van Dyck.
