TOKYO, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Social networking site Twitter said its services were unavailable for more than an hour in Japan as users in the country made a record number of tweets.

Twitter said Japanese users sent a record 16,197 tweets per second after midnight on New Year's Day, nearly triple the amount sent at the same time last year, causing the site to become unavailable for more than an hour, ABC News reported Tuesday.
