BERKLEY, Mich., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A woman believed to be Michigan's longest-serving nurse has announced her retirement only one month prior to her 90th birthday.

Dorothe Canty, who became a nurse near the start of World War II and was recognized by the state Legislature in 2007 as Michigan's longest-serving nurse, said she completed her final shift Thursday at Dr. Alan Bolton's obstetrics/gynecology practice in Berkley, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

"My husband always said, 'Just say the word 'go' to Dorothe, and she's already gone,'" Canty said.

Canty said she retired once before, in 1984, but her retirement quickly ended when Bolton asked her to work for a few days, which turned into years.

"Don't tell them," Canty said, "but I'm not giving back the office keys just yet."
