St. Augustine resident Mildred McQuaig, 87, said she and her husband, Melvin, 90, celebrated their anniversary Sunday with a crowd of "only 89 people," including children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, The St. Augustine (Fla.) Daily Record reported Tuesday.
"We didn't expect a whole lot out of people like they do now," McQuaig said of her marriage's longevity. "We worked hard and we didn't expect things. We didn't expect it to be easy or given to us. We worked for it."
"You have to learn to trust in each other and pick your battles, not fuss and fight about every little thing. I think that's the secret of being together: Forgive and be forgiven," she said.
