Man arrested in Tiki torch attack

SHERWOOD, Ore., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Authorities in Oregon said a man was apparently under the influence of drugs when he broke into a home and attacked residents with a Tiki torch.

Police said Matthew Zamora, 28, of Sherwood, is believed to have been under the influence of drugs late Christmas Day when he allegedly grabbed an unlit Tiki torch from the back yard of the Aloha home and forced his way into the house, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday.

A couple sleeping inside said they awoke to see Zamora, who was wearing only underwear, socks and a bandana around his neck, swinging the Tiki torch at them, police said.

The man grabbed a handgun next to the bed, but Zamora knocked it out of his hand, causing it to fire off a round into the wall. The woman grabbed a shotgun and ordered the suspect to leave the house, police said.

Zamora was climbing out of a bathroom window when Washington County sheriff's deputies arrived and arrested him on charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, giving false information to police, menacing and criminal mischief.
