AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- An Ohio couple who found $12,000 while walking in Akron said they turned the cash in because it was "what Jesus would have done."

The 63-year-old Akron woman, who asked not to be named, said she and her husband were walking in the Ellet neighborhood around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday when they discovered a tan cloth bag containing $12,000 and various papers, the Akron Beacon Journal reported Monday.

The couple contacted police, who were able to return the cash to its owners, a Springfield Township couple.

"We just did what Jesus would have done," the woman said. "My father was a minister and he always told me: 'Just do the right thing.'"

Police lauded the couple for doing the right thing.

"With today's economy and the way things are, to have someone find the money and turn it in, they're very lucky it was found by such an honest couple," police Lt. Rick Edwards said.
