WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A Hawaii resident mistakenly reported spotting the Obama family dog, Bo, days before the canine appeared in Virginia with the president.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday the dog was spotted going for a walk in the neighborhood where the first family is staying, but Bo was photographed Thursday on a shopping trip to PetSmart in Alexandria, Va., alongside President Barack Obama, who has not yet joined his family in Hawaii, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

The dueling sightings raised questions of whether Bo made a solo trip from Hawaii back to Washington just to appear with Obama, the Tribune said.

However, first lady Michelle Obama's office quickly responded to a request for information on the dog's whereabouts during the vacation.

"Bo has been in D.C. this whole time," the office said.
