Police: Suspect asked for 'his weed back'

MIDLAND, Pa., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Police in Pennsylvania said a man charged with marijuana possession asked if he could "have his weed back" when he was released from custody.

Public defender Mitchell Shaheen argued unsuccessfully in Beaver County Court to have the charges dropped against his client, Devonte Davon Jeter, 19, of Midland, who was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after a bag of marijuana was found at his feet during a May 13 traffic stop, the Beaver County Times reported Tuesday.

Sheehan told the court Monday the marijuana could have belonged to any of the four men in the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop. The defense attorney said his client had told officers he had intended to purchase the marijuana but had not yet made the transaction.

However, officer Bruce Clark testified Jeter had claimed ownership of the marijuana when he was released from police custody.

"Mr. Jeter asked if he could have his weed back," Clark testified.

"I don't know what else 'Can I have my weed back' can mean, other than it's his," prosecutor Kevin Kindred said.

The charges were held for court.
