CHICAGO, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Administrators at Illinois universities said they are registering their school names with the .xxx domain to prevent porn sites from using the addresses.
Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, Chicago State University and Illinois State University all said they have purchased the .xxx domain names with their schools' names included during the early registration for the domain to prevent pornography practitioners from using the Web addresses when the domain names became available to the public Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.
"We have no intentions of creating a site that would reside on that domain," said Northwestern spokesman Alan Cubbage, who said the purchase was a means of "protecting Northwestern's good name."
Chicago State spokeswoman Deborah Douglas said csu.xxx and chicagostateuniversity.xxx were registered by the school as a "defensive maneuver."
"I think you can look at the 'Girls Gone Wild' phenomenon and figure [adult Web sites] may aim at the college-aged demographic," she said. "We need to protect the integrity of our students and our brand. Porn and parasite, you can put those in the same sentence."
