NUTLEY, N.J., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A beagle mix that survived the gas chamber at an Alabama shelter has been adopted by a New Jersey family who said they "can't deny he has a purpose."

Joe Dwyer of Nutley said he and his wife, Geralynn, and daughter, Jenna, brought Daniel the miracle beagle mix home last week and the canine will now be used to fight for laws against gas chambers at animal shelters, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.

"He won't be exploited," Dwyer said. "His life as a part of this family is paramount."

"We can't deny he has a purpose," said Dwyer, a motivational speaker and dog trainer.

Daniel was brought to New Jersey by The Eleventh Hour Rescue of Rockaway, N.J., after he survived being euthanized alongside several other dogs at a Florence, Ala., shelter in September.
