Reddit aims for Secret Santa record

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The San Francisco social news Web site Reddit says it is aiming to set a Guinness World Record for the largest-ever Secret Santa gift exchange.

Reddit said registration for the online Secret Santa started Nov. 1 and will run through Nov. 25 with an aim of topping the more than 17,000 participants in 90 countries from last year's event, Guinness World Records announced on its Web site.

Reddit said special accounts are being set up for the first time this year to allow those without Reddit accounts to participate in the gift exchange, and share photos and videos of the gifts they receive.

"We're dedicated to making this the largest and best Secret Santa the world has ever seen," said Erik Martin, general manager of Reddit. "While the Reddit Secret Santa will always belong to the community, we want to make this year's initiative as inclusive as possible, even if that means some participants are new to Reddit."
