MEMPHIS, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The former "duckmaster" for The Peabody hotel in Memphis was sentenced to 18 months in prison for robbing a bank earlier this year.

Daniel J. Fox, who served as caretaker for The Peabody's ducks from 2003 until 2007, told the court he was depressed and in dire financial straits when he walked into the SunTrust branch inside a Kroger store in February and demanded money, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported Wednesday.

Fox was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to repay $959 to the bank.

Teller Clayton Mullen, who told the court Fox was very apologetic during the robbery, shook Fox's hand, hugged him and wished him well prior to the sentencing hearing.

"When the victim hugs and shakes your hand here, that makes a pretty strong statement," the judge said. "Still, you put yourself and other people in the bank in a very bad situation where something more could have gone wrong. A security guard could have shot you or someone else in the store."
