Crash releases 25 million bees

ST. GEORGE, Utah, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Authorities in Utah said 25 million bees were released onto Interstate 15 in St. George when the flatbed truck carrying the hives rolled in a construction zone.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Altenes said the truck was carrying the 460 hives south around 5:30 p.m. Sunday when it rolled in a construction zone, releasing the bees onto the roadway, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, Altenes said.

The released bees stung several people, including the truck driver and his wife, who were hospitalized with injuries and stings, and led to another crash and a fire when crews were unable to remove the truck.

Altenes said troopers consulted beekeepers about how best to remove the insects.

Traffic lanes reopened early Monday morning.
