PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A Florida band teacher pleaded no contest to charges stemming from allegations he sent nude pictures of himself to a 14-year-old girl.
Dennis Mulder, 42, of Port St. Lucie, was sentenced to two years in prison followed by eight years of sex-offender probation after he pleaded no contest Tuesday to a charge of transmitting harmful material to a minor, TCPalm.com reported Friday.
Assistant State Attorney Brandon White said Mulder, who was arrested March 16, sent pictures of his genitalia and more than 100 text messages to a 14-year-old student in one of his classes at Allapattah Flats K-8 School.
The girl's mother told authorities she discovered one of the text messages March 6 and her daughter attempted suicide the following day.
Circuit Judge James McCann ordered Mulder to relinquish his teaching certificate.
St. Lucie County School District spokeswoman Janice Karst said district policy states "anyone convicted of a crime involving a child, whether it's a felony or a misdemeanor, can't work for the district."
