CONCORD, N.C., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A North Carolina 10-year-old said he is aiming for Guinness World Records fame by creating the world's largest homemade crayon.

Chase Carey, a fifth-grader at Odell Elementary School in Concord, said his project will serve as a community service project for his school and raise awareness for Petey's Promise, a non-profit food bank for pets operated by the boy's mother, Liz Mellott, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Thursday.

Carey said a 10-foot mold has been created for the crayon and he is collecting crayons of all colors to melt together to create the giant coloring utensil.

The finished crayon will be revealed to the public Oct. 29 at the "Coloring for Critters" event at The Village Church in Concord. All proceeds from the event, which includes food and crafts, will benefit Petey's Promise and the Academically and Intellectually Gifted program at Odell Elementary.

"I am so proud of Chase and his dedication to Petey's Promise and the Coloring for Critters event. Now we just need to break that crayon record," Mellott said.
