PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Phil Mitsch, a Republican candidate for the New Jersey Senate, says his advice to women to be a "lady in the living room, a whore in the bedroom" was sensible.

Mitsch, a retired real estate broker running in a heavily Democratic district in Camden County, told The Philadelphia Inquirer he was actually advising men with his Twitter post. He told his 44,000 followers on Sept. 2: "Women, you increase your odds of keeping your men by being faithful, a lady in the living room and a whore in the bedroom."

"That's a great tip," he said at a meeting Wednesday with the editorial board. "That shows the utmost respect for women. … What I was trying to say to men was, 'Men, look, if you got to go out and play around and you can't be honest with a woman and respect her, then you're better off just doing pay, play, and get the 'F' away.'"

State Republican leaders have urged Mitsch to drop out of the race, although he continues to have the support of the Camden County chairman. Democratic Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, who represents the district where Mitsch is running, said the "thought process" behind the tweet is "disgusting."

Mitsch told the Inquirer he believes another tip he allegedly sent a follower by direct message is a fake. The follower who got the advice to tell women they can't talk but they can "moan" is now working for a Democrat outside New Jersey.
