NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Police said a truck driver crossing from New Jersey into New York was caught using a cable mechanism to hide his license plate from an E-Z Pass toll camera.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said an officer on the George Washington Bridge saw the front plate on a big rig carrying a load of iron pipes disappear and reappear while traveling in the E-Z Pass toll lane of Interstate 95 on the bridge around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Officers said Nelson Vaquiz, 36, of Virginia, was pulled over and officers discovered a cable in the cab of his vehicle could be pulled to retract the front plate. They said the rear plate was bent to make it invisible to the toll lane cameras.

Vaquiz, who was allegedly using the trick plate in an attempt to avoid paying the $65 toll, was arrested and charged with theft of service, possession of burglary tools and eluding. His vehicle and its load were impounded.
