BATON ROUGE, La., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Louisiana officials said 26,000 drivers who were incorrectly charged $3 fees were sent refund checks, but many of the checks were mistakenly made out for $300.

The state Office of Motor Vehicles said the drivers were erroneously charged $3 late fees when renewing their license tags during the summer due to a computer software error and the office's bank, JP Morgan Chase, mistakenly made out many of the refund checks for $300, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Thursday.

Staci Hoyt, deputy assistant secretary of the Office of Motor Vehicles, said the department is unsure of exactly how many of the checks were made out incorrectly, but the checks with the incorrect amount will not be honored by the bank and corrected checks will be sent out.

Hoyt said the checks were made out incorrectly due to improper formatting in a data file sent from the office to the bank.

The office said the software error that led to the fines has since been corrected.
