BERLIN, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- German plastic surgeons said they were surprised by a recent dramatic increase in demand for penis enlargement operations.
Sven von Saldern, president of the German Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, said penis enlargement operations are now the seventh most common aesthetic procedures performed on men in the country, The Local reported Friday.
"That surprised even us," von Saldern said of the increase.
He said the association has also noticed an increase in demand for genital-related procedures for women, but they have yet to break the Top 10 most common surgeries.
"It must have something to do with the trend toward intimate shaving," he said. Von Saldern said cosmetic surgery on female genitals also tends to involve the correction of functional problems rather than merely changing their appearance.
"For men, there is only the desire for more volume," he said. "It's an especially sensitive subject because high expectations may not always be fulfilled."
