Boy, 12, delivers baby brother

CAMPBELL RIVER, British Columbia, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old Canadian boy who delivered his own baby brother when his mother went into labor in the early morning said he learned how from reading books.

Gaelan Edwards of Campbell River, British Columbia, was watching TV about 2 a.m. Saturday when he heard his mother, Danielle Edwards, 30, call for help, Postmedia News reported Friday.

"I said, 'Gaelan, when I push next, I need you to grab the baby by the shoulders and I need you to pull him out.' And he -- just like by instinct, I couldn't even believe it -- grabbed the baby by the shoulders, with the head on his wrist, and eased him out, kind of wriggled him from side to side, and pulled him onto the bed," Edwards said.

She said Gaelan clamped and cut the umbilical cord using tools from the kitchen and called to get his mother and new brother, Caynan Edwards-Strong, a ride to the hospital.

Gaelan said he learned about childbirth from reading medical books.

"Mom, I knew she was going to go into labor any day," the boy said. "Like, it was over the due date, so I'm like, 'Oh, whatever, I'll start reading these books.' I've been reading medicine books for a few years now."
