WINDSOR, Ontario, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A Canadian man who wasn't paying attention when his girlfriend asked to get married made up for it with a complete wedding she didn't know she was attending.

Shawn Lippert, 37, and Colleen Freker, 32, have shared a house in the border city of Windsor, Ontario, since 2004. A year ago as Lippert was playing a video game, Freker said she wanted to get married and Lippert was too involved with the game to acknowledge her, the Toronto Star reported.

After the arguing ended, Lippert said he set out on a mission of romantic deception and plotting that culminated with a secret but well-attended wedding that took Freker completely by surprise.

In the past year, he said he regularly asked his girlfriend what she would want for a dream wedding, all the while saying they would elope to Las Vegas next month to get married.

Saturday, Freker and a girlfriend arrived at a restaurant for what she was told was a retirement party.

Instead, Lippert dropped to one knee and proposed. She accepted and once inside the restaurant found 207 invited family and friends and all the decorations and flowers she had dreamed of. Her fiance had moved all of the furniture and her make-up supplies from their bedroom, along with the wedding dress she bought recently. The wedding ring was also there, as were her sister and several friends as bridesmaids.

Video of the surprise can be seen at www.operationwhitecake.com.
