The employees of SMART technologies in Ottawa, Ontario, said they won the jackpot from the Lotto 6/49 drawing Wednesday, the same day 10 of them received layoff notices, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

"We all know that $400,000 (U.S. $403,716) doesn't make you rich. That comfort zone for the rest of your life is the nice story," said Tony Mather, 50, one of the winners.

Another winner, Colin Willard, said the group is planning to visit Toronto to claim their prize Friday.

Italian police arrest 20 'gladiators'

ROME, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Police in Rome said officers went undercover in gladiator garb to arrest 20 costumed workers accused of using violence to protect their territory.

Investigators said officers disguised themselves as costumed performers outside of the Colosseum and soon found themselves under attack from other gladiator impersonators working with five tourist agencies, the BBC reported Friday.

The gladiators charge people to pose for pictures and receive payments from tourism agencies for convincing tourists to take advantage of their guided tours.

Police said the undercover operation was planned after rival gladiators reported being driven out of the area by threats and attacks from the group arrested.

Researcher has 'baldness calculator'

BIELEFELD, Germany, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A German hair loss specialist said his online calculator can help men predict the approximate age when they will go bald.

Dr. Adolf Klenk of the Alpecin research institute in Bielefeld said the baldness calculator uses a series of questions answered by users to calculate approximately when they will go bald, Sky News reported Friday.

The Web site also features a tool for men to upload pictures of themselves to see what they would look like with a bald head.

"It's not a disease so there isn't a cure," Alpecin spokesman Rick Guttridge said. "But what you can do is treat the condition, with medications to boost your hair."

"What we have discovered is testosterone has a negative effect on hair loss ... the testosterone makes the energy in each hair follicle run out sooner, so the more testosterone a person has the sooner they will burn out of their energy and the hair will drop out sooner," the spokesman said.

Detonated briefcase contained movie script

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Police in California said a suspicious briefcase detonated by a bomb squad outside of a talent agency contained an aspiring screenwriter's script.

Beverly Hills police said the man brought the locked briefcase to the agency in the 400 block of North Camden Avenue at about 9 a.m. Thursday in hope of getting someone at the agency to read his script, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

However, the man left his briefcase behind when he left and a security guard moved it to the alleyway behind the office. Police responded to the report of a suspicious locked briefcase and the Los Angeles County sheriff's bomb squad was called in to investigate.

The bomb squad arrived about 10:30 a.m. and detonated the case, which was then found to contain the script along with other papers and a laptop computer.
