Man gets lost ring back after 45 years

AMELIA, Ohio, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- An Ohio man said he was overjoyed to be reunited with the class ring he lost in a creek after his high school graduation 45 years ago.

John Kaldmo of Amelia said he lost his ring when he fell into Four Mile Creek a month after he graduated from Anderson High School in 1966, WLWT-TV, Cincinnati, reported Thursday.

"The turbulent water washed me down about 50 feet, and when I got out, I noticed my class ring was gone," he said.

Kaldmo said he searched for the ring but eventually gave up hope of ever finding it.

However, Avery Dorsch, 10, said she found the ring in the now-dry creek bed while walking recently with some friends.

Dorsch and her mother said they put a notice about the ring in an e-mail about an upcoming reunion for Kaldmo's class. Kaldmo saw the notice and soon had the ring back in his hands.

"She was as excited as I was after 45 years to get my ring back," Kaldmo said of Dorsch. "She was jumping up and down when we got there, and I think I was, too."

Kaldmo said he is looking forward to wearing the ring to his upcoming 45-year class reunion.

Police: Workers stole Smurfs merchandise

NEW YORK, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Authorities in New York said three workers at an event-production company stole "The Smurfs" memorabilia two days before the film opened.

Court papers said the three Everything Entertainment workers, Stephen Salley, 22, James Geddie, 19, and Devine Farrow, 23, took "Smurfs" items including figurines, cereal, bags and lollipops from the company's warehouse July 22, two days before the items were meant to be used at a tent for the film's premiere in the city, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Police said Salley posted on the Facebook page about his intent to go "Mackin smufs."

The suspects are facing charges of petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Severed foot in lake was Halloween prop

ANTIOCH, Ill., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Authorities in Illinois said a severed foot a boy reported spotting in a lake was found by a search team to be "a fake Halloween prop."

Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Christopher Thompson and Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief John Skillman said a boy reported hooking the foot Wednesday while fishing in Lake Marie and said he reeled it to within 3 feet of his boat before it fell back into the water, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Thompson said a sonar and diving team scoured the lake for 8 1/2 hours before finding the foot and determining it to be "a fake Halloween prop."

"Needless to say, everyone involved is relieved that the foot turned out to be a fake one," Thompson said.

Police: Man skipped out on fare, left bong

WILMETTE, Ill., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Police in Illinois said a man who fled a taxi cab without paying left items behind, including his ID and a bong for smoking marijuana.

Wilmette police said Christopher Porter, 19, of Evanston, got into the taxi with a friend at 2:30 a.m. Aug. 4 in Winnetka and the other man was dropped off with the understanding that Porter would be paying the entire fare, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

However, police said Porter allegedly fled the cab without paying at 3:38 a.m. in Wilmette and left behind a backpack containing items including his ID, the marijuana-smoking device, a time card bearing Porter's name and keys.

The driver turned the bag over to police, who used Porter's ID to track down his father. Investigators said Porter's father sent his son to the police station, where he was ticketed for possession of marijuana.

Police said Porter paid the $15 cab fare plus a $5 tip and the driver declined to press charges.
