Former space workers take on headstones

TITUSVILLE, Fla., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Former aerospace workers have started a Florida company using their talents for mapping locations in space to map human faces for headstones.

LookLikes, a Florida-based company comprised largely of former NASA workers, said it will unveil its three-dimensional headstone images at October's National Funeral Directors Association in October and the technology will then become available for leasing at funeral homes, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Tuesday.

"I feel we can take the aura of the cemetery to a new dimension," said Craig Nolan, business administrator and engineer placement for LookLikes. "I think the baby boomers are of a different mindset than past generations, and this is something they will embrace."

The company was created after Michael Shulman, managing partner of the non-profit Emerging Growth Institute and now science officer for LookLikes, gave a series of presentations to aerospace workers about translating their space industry skills to terrestrial uses.

"Technically the system we designed is not based on existing technology, but new technology,'' Shulman said. "Rather than a flat surface model typical of Mars or Moon topographical results, ours produces a round space. The space program is flat -- ours has hills and valleys."
