AFTON, Minn., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Organizers of the Midwest Tomatofest in Minnesota said 10 tons of overripe tomatoes were thrown, crushed and squashed by revelers.

Kamal Mohamed, one of the organizers of the event, said 2,000 tickets were sold in advance for Sunday's fruit-tossing event in Afton and another 400 were sold at the gate, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Monday.

Mohamed, a University of St. Thomas senior, said the overripe tomatoes were shipped from Kansas and had been slated to be thrown away.

The organizers said the event, which was inspired by the annual La Tomatina tomato-tossing event in Bunol, Spain, raised money for the Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul, Minn.

Mohamed said he and his fellow organizers are already planning for next year's event.

"We're going to do this again, even bigger and better," he said. "We're going to keep some things a surprise, like location and other things, but it was a lot of fun. We're excited to do this again."
