NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- A New York City doorman has heroically pulled a second man to safety from a subway train track, officials say.

Carlos Cancel, 41, of the Bronx saved a man who drunkenly fell onto the subway tracks early Friday, the New York Daily News reported.

"It was like a flashback," Cancel said. "I was thinking to myself, 'How could this happen to me twice?'"

In 1992, Cancel performed the same feat, jumping off a subway platform to drag out a drunken man who had fallen onto the 34th Street tracks.

Friday's eerily similar experience happened at the West 72nd Street station on Cancel's way home from work as a doorman at a midtown apartment building.

Two women started screaming as the man fell off the platform, landing face-first on the tracks.

"I told [the women] to call 911, then I looked to see if a train was coming and I jumped right in," said Cancel.

"I scooped him up like a baby, like cradling him with his head on my arm and supporting his legs," said Cancel, who stands 5-foot-6 and weighs 189 pounds while the man he saved was about 4 inches taller and weighed about 200 pounds. "And I swung him really hard -- I basically threw him up onto the platform."

A few minutes later, a train pulled up to the platform.

"It's just instinct," he said. "I couldn't let this poor guy die. I'm glad I was there to help."
