The department said it held a contest and approved a new whale tail plate, due to go on sale Aug. 2, after artist Wyland asked the state for 20 percent of profits from his whale tail mural plates for his environmental foundation, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Advertisement California Coastal Commission officers said the new design, which features a humpback whale tail, is a more realistic depiction of the marine mammals. Wyland's plates, one of 10 specialty plates available in the state, were introduced in 1997 and have raised more than $60 million for conservation programs.
