ANCHORAGE, Alaska, July 8 (UPI) -- Police in Alaska said a drunken woman broke into a 77-year-old woman's house and walked off with a pug when the homeowner confronted her.

Anchorage police said the homeowner told them she awoke at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday to find the woman standing in her bedroom, the Anchorage Daily News reported Thursday.

The woman told police the suspect, identified as Sherry Smith, 39, told her she was a friend of her daughter and the woman replied by saying she does not have a daughter.

Police said the homeowner guided the woman toward the door and the suspect grabbed one of the homeowner's two pugs while leaving.

The homeowner followed the woman, who was on foot, in her Ford F-150 pickup truck and repeatedly asked the woman to give the dog back. She said the suspect finally shoved the pug through the window of her vehicle as officers were arriving.

Smith, who police said appeared drunk, was arrested on charges of first-degree burglary and second-degree theft.
