Atheist group wants 'heaven' off of sign

NEW YORK, July 6 (UPI) -- A New York atheist group is threatening to sue over the word "heaven" on a city street honoring firefighters who died during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Ken Bronstein, president of New York City Atheists, said the group objects to the word "heaven" in "Seven in Heaven Way," a portion of Richards Street renamed in honor of seven firefighters who died during the terror attacks on the World Trade Center, WPIX-TV, New York, reported Wednesday.

"It's just like product placement," Bronstein said.

"We are not against honoring those who died on 9/11, but we are arguing the word heaven should not be used. It has religious connotations," he said.

Bronstein said the group is prepared to sue to have the name changed.

"It's a whole conspiracy trying [to] prove we are a Christian nation and imprinting our culture and our vocabulary," he said.
