Steve Hoye, 57, put up the 4-foot-by-8-foot billboard last year, The Ledger, of Lakeland, Fla., reported Saturday. The sign also gives contact information for Florida Alimony Reform Inc., a group created to advocate for change of Florida state alimony laws.

Hoye says he pays $960 a month to his ex-wife in alimony, which is putting him into debt. His divorce, initialized by his wife, was finalized in 2007. He will be paying alimony permanently until he or his ex-wife dies.

"The Florida court system has its hooks in me for the rest of my life, as long as my (ex-)wife is alive," said Hoye.

The group claims men are unfairly strained with alimony payments, which are ordered by a court system that rewards ex-spouses for not working.

Coyote saved from Louisiana swimming pool

KENNER, La., June 26 (UPI) -- Police in Kenner, La., rescued a coyote pup from a backyard swimming pool.

The Kenner police officers pulled out the young male coyote Thursday morning after receiving a phone call at 7:20 a.m. from a woman who thought the animal trapped in her backyard pool was a dog, New Orleans' WDSU-TV reported.

The coyote was rescued and put into the back of a police car, where it waited for a city humane officer to take it into custody. It was turned over to state wildlife officials Thursday.

It was the most recent close encounter with coyotes in the area, the television station said, and is suspected to have been caused by high water levels on the Mississippi River.

Sunflower seeds cover Texas highway

SAN ANTONIO, June 26 (UPI) -- A truck toppled over a highway exit in San Antonio, covering the pavement in sunflower seeds, authorities said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was merging onto U.S. 90 from I-37 around 3 p.m. Saturday when he overcorrected his turn and sent the rig rolling, police told the San Antonio Express-News. Several tons of sunflower seeds were littered across U.S. 90, which was closed late into the evening while a crew worked to clean the mess.

"I wouldn't like the highway taste," Captain Charles S. Blackden said. "But the birds are going to have a field day."

The driver was unharmed, but a female passenger in the truck had to be taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

'Ugliest' dog crowned in Calif. event

PETALUMA, Calif., June 26 (UPI) -- Judges say Yoda, a 1.8-pound, 4-legged assault to the eyes from Hanford, Calif., outranked the competition to win the title of World's Ugliest Dog.

The 14-year-old, scrawny, teacup of unsightliness formally known as a Chinese Crested, came away from Friday's competition at the Sonoma-Marin Fair with a $1,000 prize and a trophy for her owner, Terry Schumacher, the Petaluma (Calif.) Argus Courier reported Saturday.

Schumacher said she had considered bringing Yoda to the contest before but couldn't get away from her job. Now it's easier because she owns her own business: a dog grooming parlor.
