KENNER, La., June 26 (UPI) -- Police in Kenner, La., rescued a coyote pup from a backyard swimming pool.

The Kenner police officers pulled out the young male coyote Thursday morning after receiving a phone call at 7:20 a.m. from a woman who thought the animal trapped in her backyard pool was a dog, New Orleans' WDSU-TV reported.

The coyote was rescued and put into the back of a police car, where it waited for a city humane officer to take it into custody. It was turned over to state wildlife officials Thursday.

It was the most recent close encounter with coyotes in the area, the television station said, and is suspected to have been caused by high water levels on the Mississippi River.
