ATTLEBORO, Mass., June 20 (UPI) -- Police in Massachusetts said they spent a day attempting to capture a black bear that was wandering through yards.

Attleboro police said the bear was initially reported at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the Tanya Drive area and officers tracked the animal for hours until it climbed up a tree behind a home on Lamb Street at about 8 p.m., The Sun Chronicle, Attleboro, reported Monday.

Police said a crowd of about 100 people formed while officers waited for zookeepers from the Capron Park Zoo and the state environmental police to arrive.

Officials said they decided to let the bear leave on its own at about 10 p.m. after environmental officers told them tranquilizing the bear at night would violate policy.
