DADE CITY, Fla., June 16 (UPI) -- A Florida teenager who never cut his hair as a way of honoring his Cherokee heritage received his very first haircut at 14 and donated the hair to charity.

Jerry Brown of Pasco County said he received the first haircut of his life Wednesday and gave the hair to Locks of Love, a group dedicated to creating wigs for young cancer patients, Bay News 9, St. Petersburg, Fla., reported Thursday.

"I saw some patients that are cancer patients with no hair and I wanted to give them hair so they can live normal lives," the teen said.

Brown's parents said they are proud of his decision.

"It's amazing," father Jerry Brown Sr. said. "That's just the kind of kid he is. If he can help somebody, he does."

The Genesis School student said he loves his new shorter hairstyle.
