CAMBRIDGE, England, June 2 (UPI) -- The makers of a standardized test given to British teenagers last week have apologized after a math question was found to be unanswerable.

Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations, which created the AS-level exam taken by nearly 6,800 students Thursday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, said it is taking steps to ensure the grades of students are not affected by the error, the BBC reported Thursday.

"We very much regret that there was a mistake ... and that our quality assurance procedures failed to identify this error," an OCR spokeswoman said. "Because we have been alerted to this so early, we are able to take this error into account when marking the paper. We will also take it into account when setting the grade boundaries. We have sent a letter to all schools and colleges explaining in more detail what we shall do."

"We do apologize again that this has happened," the spokeswoman said.
