Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe PONCHATOULA, La., May 17 (UPI) -- Officials in a Louisiana city said they opened a time capsule from 1961 and found newspapers, photographs and items celebrating the city's 1961 centennial. The Ponchatoula officials said the time capsule, which was unearthed as part of the city's 150th anniversary celebrations, was opened Saturday before a large crowd, the Hammond (La.) Daily Star reported Tuesday. Advertisement Officials said the capsule was difficult to access, as it was embedded in a large concrete cylinder they needed a jackhammer to break open. They said the process took about 45 minutes. The capsule also contained a letter to the city's 2011 citizens from the Ponchatoula Centennial Executive Committee, which assembled and buried the capsule. The letter said the committee hoped the 150th anniversary celebration would be a "roaring success." Officials said they are now accepting ideas from citizens for items to be put inside a new time capsule, planned to be buried July 3 and opened in 2061 for the city's bicentennial.
