VegNews apologizes for photos of meat

SAN FRANCISCO, April 20 (UPI) -- VegNews, a U.S. magazine that provides recipes and eating tips for vegetarians, has pledged never again to pass off photos of meat dishes as meatless.

The magazine also promised to build up a photo bank of stock pictures of meat-free food, CNN reported Tuesday.

VegNews was outed by a blogger who discovered some of its photos had a rather meaty look. In one case, she examined a photo of "Vegan Spare Ribs" and discovered it was an iStockphoto shot of a "Barbecue Ribs Dinner" with the bones edited out on computer.

At first the magazine defended its actions, arguing that stock photos of vegan dishes are hard to come by. This week, it posted a full apology on its Web site addressed to the "VegWeb community."

"We screwed up," the letter said. "With regard to our use of symbolic imagery in VegNews, our readers got it right. We wholeheartedly apologize. We assure you that we will never again use non-vegan photographs in VegNews."
