Firefighters free woman from sunroof

MANCHESTER, N.H., April 20 (UPI) -- Firefighters in New Hampshire said they were called to a parking lot when a woman attempting to retrieve keys from a friend's car got wedged in the sunroof.

Manchester firefighters said when they arrived at the Walgreen's parking lot at Varney and South Main streets about 6:45 p.m. Monday they found the woman stuck up to her waist in the Saab's sunroof, WMUR-TV, Manchester, reported Tuesday.

The woman told firefighters she had been trying to retrieve her friend's keys from the vehicle.

Firefighters said they tried opening the doors but instead armed the security system, locking the woman in place. They said they were eventually able to squeeze the sunroof open and free her using a portable airbag.

The woman, who complained of minor breathing difficulties, was checked and released at the scene, the fire department said.

Woman charged $6K to fiance's dad's card

BILLINGS, Mont., April 20 (UPI) -- Authorities in Montana said a woman admitted making nearly $6,000 in unauthorized purchases using her fiance's father's credit card.

Brittany Marie Sterna-Lanaghan, 20, of Billings pleaded guilty Monday in District Judge Gregory Todd's courtroom to felony deceptive practices by common scheme, the Billings Gazette reported Tuesday.

Sterna-Lanaghan admitted making 55 unauthorized transactions on the credit card of her prospective father-in-law, including wedding-related purchases.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors and Sterna-Lanaghan's public defender are recommending a six-year deferred sentence and a $500 fine. The agreement also requires her to write a letter of apology and pay $5,776 in restitution.

Speeder admits to 160 mph chase

WHEATFIELD, Ind., April 20 (UPI) -- Police in Indiana said a motorist who fled an officer admitted reaching 160 mph before crashing his 2002 Chevrolet Camaro.

Investigators said Joshua Curtis, 25, of Wheatfield was spotted traveling 53 mph in a 35 mph zone early Sunday and he sped up to above 100 mph when the officer gave chase, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.

Police said the vehicle hit a jog in the road and crashed into a utility pole.

Curtis and his wife Mallory, 24, who was riding in the car, were not injured, police said.

Officers said Curtis admitted reaching 160 mph while fleeing the officer.

Curtis was charged with resisting police, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He also received citations for speeding, driving with a suspended license and having false license plates.

Japanese man, 114, named world's oldest

KYODO, Japan, April 20 (UPI) -- Guinness World Records announced a 114-year-old Japanese man has been declared the world's oldest living man following the death of the previous record holder.

Guinness said Jiroemon Kimura of Kyodo celebrated his 114th birthday Tuesday and inherited the title of the world's oldest man from Walter Breuning of the United States, who died April 14.

The record-keeping organization said Kimura, the last known man living to have been born prior to 1897, is now the third oldest person in Japan and the sixth oldest person in the world. He is the only man on the list of the world's 10 oldest people.

Kimura said part of his secret to long life is eating meals in small portions.

"With the sad passing of Walter, the world is left with the one remaining man who was alive in the 19th century," said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness. "It's incredible to think that Kimura's life spans three centuries -- when he was born, Dracula had yet to be published, Queen Victoria was a few weeks from her Diamond Jubilee and the Wright Brothers were six years from their first successful test flight. How the world has moved on during his lifetime!"
