MANAMA, Bahrain, April 11 (UPI) -- A Qatari man paid more than $3.7 million at a Bahrain auction for a car license plate bearing the number 55555.
The Arabic-language Al-Sharq newspaper said the man paid $3,761,570 to obtain the plate at the Manama auction, which began bidding at $1.1 million, Gulf News reported Monday.
The big sale, however, fell far short of the record for the most amount of money paid for a license plate. A businessman in the United Arab Emerates paid $14.3 million in a 2008 auction for an Abu Dhabi license plate bearing the number 1.
