NEW YORK, March 27 (UPI) -- The Reptile House at New York's Bronx Zoo remained closed Sunday as staff searched for a deadly Egyptian cobra, the zoo said.

The zoo told CBS New York the building was closed as soon as the venomous snake was discovered missing from its enclosure, which was not open to visitors Saturday afternoon.

Zookeepers said they believed the 20-inch-long snake was somewhere in the building.

"We are informing the public out of an abundance of caution, and will continue to take whatever steps necessary to ensure public safety," the zoo said.

The species is native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, the New York Daily News said.
