LONDON, March 18 (UPI) -- A British designer said a dress once worn by royal fiancee Kate Middleton for a charity fashion show sold for $126,000, more than 10 times the expected amount.

Charlotte Todd, 31, who designed the see-through black and gold dress, said the winning bid came from an anonymous buyer who indicated he was purchasing on behalf of a man named "Nick from Jersey," The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The dress was worn by Middleton in a 2002 charity fashion show when she and future fiance Prince William were students.

"I was keeping hold of the dress. No one has worn it since Kate," Todd said. "It was squashed in my parents' wardrobe underneath loads of junk. But now it's quite a responsibility -- people are really interested in the dress. I'd rather be rid of it. It was just pure luck that Kate, out of all those girls, wore it for a few seconds. I don't even see it as a dress, really. To me it's just a piece of fabric."
