Officer Rita Mendel of the Delaware city police said a motorist called authorities about 11 a.m. Monday and reported money scattered in the median of Route 23, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Tuesday.

The department said officers spent about a half hour rounding up the cash, which officers said amounted to tens of thousands, although they did not specify the full total. Officers said they were hoping the owner of the money would come forward.

$170k allegedly smuggled in underwear

NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- Investigators said a New York woman found with $170,000 hidden in her underwear at an airport was trying to avoid paying taxes on a property sale.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer George Wolynski said Monday in New York Federal Court he discovered Claire Abdeldaim had 1,699 $100 bills sewn into the underwear she was carrying in her purse when she was stopped at John F. Kennedy International Airport in June 2010, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

Wolynski said Abdeldaim had claimed to be carrying $17,000 and only admitted to having more cash when she was confronted with the evidence. He said the suspect "was told by a friend not to declare all the money" to avoid paying taxes on the cash, which she was bringing home from Sudan after selling land left to her by her late husband.

John Carman, Abdeldaim's lawyer, said his client, who is originally from Haiti, left a zero off the amount because of her problems with the language. He suggested Wolynski did not allow Abdeldaim to change the amount on her declaration because he stood to receive a salary bonus for the seizure.

Abdeldaim, who is free on $100,000 bail, could face up to 21 months in jail if convicted of smuggling.

KEY LARGO, Fla., March 9 (UPI) -- Florida authorities said a man accused of burglarizing a home and a boat was arrested thanks to a palm print discovered on a toilet seat.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said an arrest warrant was issued March 4 for Robert Johnson, 46, of Key Largo, after a palm print on a toilet seat at the burglarized home was traced to him, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Investigators said items taken during the Oct. 9 break-in include a TV, multiple DVD players, DVDs, a 12 pack of beer, a GPS device and electronic equipment from the homeowner's boat.

Johnson was found staying in a neighbor's backyard shed and arrested on two burglary counts and two counts of grand theft. He was jailed in lieu of $30,000 bond, the newspaper said.
