BUXTON, Va., March 4 (UPI) -- Authorities in Virginia said an elementary school was evacuated when an object resembling a hand grenade was found in a student's backpack.

The Dare County Sheriff's Office said a school resource officer at Cape Hatteras Elementary School in Buxton discovered the object, which appeared to be a hand grenade, in a student's backpack at about 3 p.m. Wednesday and summoned authorities, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported Thursday.

Deputies evacuated the school and the Dare County Emergency Management coordinator arrived on the scene and identified the object as an inert practice grenade.

The sheriff's office said the incident is being investigated.
