The Macomb County and St. Clair County residents said they can see thick clouds of deceased silver shad from the massive fish die-off, which began in mid-December and has yet to be explained by state investigators, beneath the ice and they are preparing for the odors and other resulting problems from the expected mid-March thaw, The Detroit News reported Wednesday. Advertisement "I personally have never seen anything like this," said Lloyd Kimmen of St. Clair County. "You see the occasional fish frozen in the ice or something -- but never enough to fill garbage cans like that." State officials said there are estimated to be tens of thousands of dead silver shad trapped beneath the ice. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment suggested a virus may be to blame for the die-off, but further investigation is required.
