Cross-country drive on 2 gallons of gas
NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A New Jersey woman says a New York City television station caused her thousands of dollars in emotional damage when it broadcast the wrong lottery numbers.
In a lawsuit against WABC-TV and its parent companies, American Broadcasting Co. and Walt Disney, Rakel Daniele of Fort Lee said she believed she was $250,000 richer and was "severely damaged" upon learning that was not true, The Record of Hackensack reported Saturday.
The suit, originally filed in New Jersey Superior Court, was transferred to federal court last week.
In legal papers, Daniele said WABC compounded the wrong by broadcasting the same incorrect numbers twice.
On June 29, 2009, the station said the winning numbers in the Mega Millions multi-state lottery were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with 12 as the Mega ball. Daniele had the first five numbers, which would have given her $250,000.
In a complaint seeking $75,000, Daniele's lawyer, Evan Baker, said WABC's conduct was "beyond all possible bounds of decency, and were atrocious, and utterly intolerable in a civilized community."
